After your Pregnancy Massage - 30 Minutes, do one thing first: drink water and take it easy for the rest of the day. In Penfield, I see a lot of expecting moms fit a quick session into a busy schedule, then jump right back into life. That’s the moment when soreness, lightheadedness, or that “overcooked” tired feeling can sneak up. Give your body a calm 24 hours so the work we did has time to settle in.
First 24 hours: water, rest, and no hot tubs after prenatal massage
For the first day after prenatal massage, I generally recommend a “gentle mode” approach. The goal is to support circulation, keep your nervous system calm, and avoid anything that spikes your body temperature.
Quick 24-hour checklist: Hydrate, eat something nourishing, take a lighter pace, skip strenuous exercise, and avoid hot tubs, saunas, and very hot baths.
Do this today
- Drink water steadily. If you’re not a big water person, small sips throughout the day usually go down easier than one huge bottle at once.
- Plan a low-key evening. Extra sleep is great if you can get it.
- Take a short, easy walk if you feel good. Many Penfield clients like a gentle loop near Harris Whalen Park, but keep it comfortable and stop if you feel off.
- Use pillows for support when you’re sitting or lying down. Side-lying tends to feel best in pregnancy. Try a pillow between your knees and another behind your back for support.
Skip this for 24 hours
- Hot tubs, saunas, and steaming hot baths. Heat can push you into dizziness and isn’t a great combo with pregnancy.
- Hard workouts, heavy lifting, or “let me sweat this out” classes. Light movement is fine. Strain is not.
- Long stretches lying flat on your back. If you do need to rest on your back briefly, prop yourself up so you’re more reclined than flat.
Penfield’s cooler fall evenings can make a hot bath tempting. Go with a lukewarm shower instead, then layer up and keep your muscles warm without overheating.
Mild soreness is normal. Here’s what I like for days 2 to 7.
A 30-minute pregnancy massage is short, but your body can still respond the way it does after any good bodywork. Some people feel loose and energized right away. Others feel sleepy. Mild soreness can also happen, especially if you came in carrying a lot of tension.
If you wake up a little achy
- Do a gentle walk and a few light stretches. Keep it easy and pain-free.
- Use a warm, not hot compress on tight spots for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Keep hydration steady. Many clients notice they feel better faster when they don’t get behind on fluids.
What to avoid this week
I’d still be cautious with extremes. If a workout leaves you drained or crampy, dial it back. And if you’re dealing with swelling, pelvic pressure, or more Braxton Hicks than usual, take that seriously and rest.
A quick note I give a lot of expecting moms: keep a tiny log on your phone. Write down the date/time of your massage, what areas felt great, and anything that felt tender later. It helps me make your next session smarter.
Pillows, posture, and a lukewarm shower: simple habits that keep the relief
You don’t need a complicated routine after maternity massage. The “wins” tend to come from a few small supports done consistently.
Side-sleep setup (the one most people keep)
Pillow between knees, small pillow or rolled towel under your belly if it feels supportive, and a pillow behind your back so you’re not rolling flat.
Warmth without overheating
In cooler months in Penfield, people crank up the heat. Try layers and a lukewarm shower instead of a hot soak. It keeps you comfortable and helps avoid that dizzy, flushed feeling.
Posture check that takes 10 seconds
Soften your ribs down, relax shoulders away from ears, and let your jaw unclench. Do it at red lights, at your desk, or during school pickups. It makes your massage last longer.

When to reach out after pregnancy massage (and when to call your doctor)
Most people feel calmer, looser, and a little sleepy after massage. Mild soreness can be normal too. What I don’t want you doing is guessing if something feels off.

Call your doctor right away if you notice
- Bleeding or leaking fluid
- Dizziness that doesn’t pass with rest, hydration, and food
- Contractions, cramping, or pelvic pain that feels unusual for you
- Sharp, increasing pain anywhere
And please reach out to me if you’re unsure about anything you felt during or after your session. I’d rather answer a quick question than have you sit at home worrying. I’m conveniently located near Penfield Four Corners, and I regularly see people coming in from Fairport, Webster, East Rochester, Rochester, and Perinton.
Want to plan your next visit? The 30-minute pregnancy massage is $80 and works well when you want focused relief without committing to a longer session.
