Assessment and the 1MNE
A PRRT session begins with an evaluation that may include a 1-Minute Nociceptive Exam (1MNE). The therapist watches for reactions such as gasps, grimaces, or withdrawal responses to light contact across specific areas of the body to identify which primal reflexes are overactive and contributing to a heightened protective state.
This assessment is done with you clothed and informs a targeted plan. By locating reflex-driven reactions, the therapist decides which gentle inputs to use and where to focus, keeping the session efficient for busy Penfield clients who schedule around work, family, and local errands.
Gentle manual release movements
Treatment uses light, specific manual movements — for example gentle tapping, directed pressure, or brief pulls — to stimulate the reflex and prompt a nervous system reset. These inputs are small but precise, intended to reduce an overactive sympathetic response rather than force muscular change through deep pressure.
PRRT also incorporates muscle activations when helpful so the body can integrate altered reflex signals. Developed by physical therapist John Iams, the method treats the nervous system’s protective state as a root driver of pain and tension rather than addressing only surface symptoms.
What to expect during session
Appointments are performed clothed, so please wear comfortable, flexible clothing that allows light contact to the areas being evaluated. A typical PRRT 60 MINUTES appointment is focused and hands-on; Pavlov Therapeutic Massage sets aside time to assess, perform targeted releases, and include integration techniques within that session length for $120.
